Short answer: A chart is Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant. That is six houses out of twelve — which is why so many people test positive. But the same classical texts that define the dosh also list cancellations, and most Manglik charts have at least one. Checking only the first half is how a normal placement gets turned into a crisis.
Mars is a planet of heat, drive and friction. The houses in question all touch marriage or the body: the 1st is you, the 2nd your family and speech, the 4th your home life, the 7th the marriage itself, the 8th longevity and shared resources, the 12th the bed and private life.
Mars sitting in any of these is read as bringing sharpness into married life — more heat in arguments, more force in how you assert yourself with a partner.

This is the first place the fear comes from. If you check three reference points and six houses each, almost any chart will show Manglik under some reckoning — and an astrologer who wants the reading to be dramatic can simply pick whichever one gives a yes.

The pattern worth noticing
The dosh rule is easy to check and easy to sell. The cancellation list takes real chart work and usually ends the conversation.
If someone tells you that you are Manglik and does not immediately tell you which cancellations do or do not apply in your chart, they have given you half a reading.

Not before you check the cancellations. Ask which of the seven apply to your chart. If the person who told you cannot answer that, get a second reading.
Yes, and it happens constantly. If a cancellation is present, or the rest of both charts sits well together, most practising astrologers treat the pairing as workable.
It is one of the traditional cancellations, on the reasoning that Mars’s intensity settles with maturity. Treat it as one factor among several, not a switch.
Then the dosh is considered partial and weak. A chart that is Manglik from the ascendant, the Moon and Venus is a different matter from one that shows up in only one.
Check for a cancellation first. If one applies, there is not much to remedy. If none does, remedies exist — but nobody should sell you an expensive ritual without first showing you the exact placement it is meant to address.
